THE NUN AND THE PROSTITUTE
Once
upon a time there was a small village inhabited by naive
farmers and the nun and the prostitute who also lived in this
same village.
The farmers
believed that God divided day and night among them, where the
day was for the farmers, and the night for the nun and the
prostitute. The farmers worked all day in the fields,
harvesting, planting, irrigating, and feeding the cattle. They
were serving themselves. The nun and the prostitute worked at
night. The nun spent all night, as part of her job, praying
and making supplications to God. She was serving God. The
prostitute spent all night, as her job, entertaining those in
need of love or sex. She was serving the desperate. Just
before sunset, the farmers would gather at the town hall to
discuss their daily affairs. But mostly their talks were just
gossip sessions and before the night was fully upon them, they
would depart.
One
day, while they were assembled, discussing things as usual, a
man stood up and asked, 'How long are we going to allow this
situation to continue?' This man, Billy, was fat and healthy,
but he was also dishonest, a miser, and usurer. The farmers
didn't see this. They saw him differently, because he was very
wealthy and could and did lend them money. After he spoke,
they looked at each other and wondered what he was talking
about. He noticed their perplexity and clarified, 'I am
talking about the situation between us and the nun and the
prostitute. You know, we work like dogs all day, and they
enjoy the night to the fullest, and this is not fair dealing.'
The
cleric was amazed to hear that and asked, 'What do you expect
us to do? This is God's will, as we all know.'
Billy
asked, 'Where is this law written?'
'Well,
it has always been this way. Our parents and grandparents and
ancestors, as far back as is known, followed this law. And we
are not willing to change that, as it would be a transgression
against God,' said the cleric.
'God
represents justice,' Billy commented then asked, 'Where is the
justice in this deal? You don't know what you are really
missing here. Night is so charming, full of romance and
secrets.' He was a persuasive, dynamic speaker, exciting their
instincts and emotions, and stirring up their appetites. You
could practically see them salivating.
The
cleric asked, 'What do you want us to do?'
'It is
very simple,' Billy replied. 'We have to get rid of them.'
The
cleric queried, 'How are you going to that?'
'You
will have to think of a way,' he replied.
They
shouted and yelled, 'You are the wise man, you decide and we
will follow.'
'Well,
I have only one way to do that, but I need your approval and
permission,' Billy stated.
Looking confused, they asked, ' What is it?'
'We
kill them,' Billy proposed.
'Killing is a major sin, and a capital crime, punishable by
death,' stated the cleric.
'Well,' Billy declared, 'you will have to find another way.'
They looked at each other, trying to think of another way, but
not one of them could think of anything else. 'I know killing
is an awful thing to do, but we have to do what is necessary.
Let me ask you one question. Can anyone tell me why we kill
animals, as they, too, have souls?'
Everyone was baffled by the things he said, and they just
looked at each other. Finally the cleric spoke up again, and
said, 'We kill animals to eat, to use their skin and fleece
for many different purposes.'
'For
the same reason, we have to kill the prostitute and the nun,'
Billy explained.
After a long
discussion, they agreed to continue their talks on the next
day, as night was about to fall. They assembled on the next
day as usual, except Billy had not yet appeared. So they sat
there looking at each other without saying anything, the
perplexity they were feeling was obvious. The cleric looked at
them and asked, 'Has anyone seen Billy?' Nobody answered."
The
cleric told them to send someone to look for him and tell him
they were waiting for him. Billy came to the meeting but
didn't say a word.
The
cleric looked at him and said, 'I am not going to ask you why
you were late. But I would like to continue our talks.'
Billy
pretended he had no idea what the cleric was talking about, so
he asked, 'Which talks do you mean, sir?'
The cleric
looked baffled. Everyone began looking around in confusion.
Finally, a man stood up and said, 'Billy, yesterday we talked
about what we would do with the nun and the prostitute. Then
we agreed to meet today to continue our discussion. Can't you
remember, sir?'
'I
see,' Billy remarked. 'To be honest with you, I made a
proposal yesterday, and it seemed you were not in favor of
it.'
The
cleric replied, 'We didn't refuse it. We have to discuss it
with others. I think I have a good proposal. I would like to
put it in your hands.'
They
asked, 'What is it, master?'
'I
will put forward the proposal that was made yesterday and we
will take a vote.' So the cleric looked at the naive farmers
and said, 'Those in favor of Billy's proposal please raise
your hand. If you are against it, keep your hand down.' The
vote was 20 in favor and 6 against. The cleric stated, 'We
kill the prostitute and the nun.'
They
yelled, 'We kill them. Yes, we will kill them.' Then silence
prevailed as they each thought about who would actually kill
the two women. They were simple people who had never killed
anyone and had no idea how to do it. The cleric knew what was
bothering them, so he told them to pick the strongest man to
do the killing.
Billy
looked at them and said, 'For the sake of our future and for
the prosperity of our village, I will take this
responsibility.'
They
yelled and chanted, 'Long live our savior.'
'To
make this legal, I need you to give me the authority to act on
your behalf,' said Billy.
The
nun and the prostitute were arrested, put through a mock
trial, found guilty and sentenced to death for their crimes.
Since the women of the village had started to imitate the
prostitute in her manner of dress, speech, and the way she
moved, she was charged with corrupting and breaking the moral
values of the village. The charge against the nun was that she
would make them abide in Hell. On the Day of Judgment, God
would look at them as sinners, comparing their deeds with
hers, therefore they should get rid of her so that they might
become equal in the eye of God. Everything was set up, and
Saturday was to be the execution day. They brought the nun and
the prostitute into a public yard and the executions took
place. After they were beheaded, the nun's blood mingled with
the prostitute's blood, forming a brook. After the day of
execution, night turned dull, because they didn't know what to
do at night.
